Congratulations to Dr Beka Stecky for successfully defending her PhD in Biology.
Cells in the brain and nervous system develop using a variety of signaling cues, including stress and activity. The effects of these two mechanisms are intertwined in olfactory neurons, the cells in the nose responsible for smell (a sense that is often affected in patients with neurological diseases). We are proposing to disentangle the roles of these two signals across different stages of the olfactory neuron lifespan.
Congratulations to Dr Natalie McArthur, newly minted PhD, awarded with Distinction!
The lab was full of excitement and fresh ideas this summer. We were lucky to have three summer interns, Ahana, Millie, and Aidan, and one graduate rotation student, Laura. Thank you always to the whole team and especially to the excellent mentors, Natalie, Joan, Olga, Alexa, Tibby, and Miao who grew alongside our summer group.
This August we also welcomed our newest lab members, MSTP and NBB student Nikko Baer, and Kanzer postdoctoral fellow, Maela Paul. Welcome aboard, and enjoy the fun challenges ahead!
As we near the end of summer, we also reflect on the many accomplishments…
vs Step 2 exams
vs running a Marathon
Isabella for the win!
Next challenge: Limca....
Ariel Pourmorady defended his thesis in December 2023, in the Kavli Auditorium at Zukerman Brain Mind Behavior Institute/Jerome L Greene Science Center. His body of research work, seminar and defense were spectacular, earning him recognition as one of two recipients of this year's 2024 Dean's Award for Excellence in Research, presented at Commencement.
Joan Pulupa, PhD has been nominated and elected to serve on ASCB Council in the trainee seat. Congratulations on the well-deserved honor; the field is so lucky to share Joan's amazing leadership, mentoring, and scientific excellence.
Marianna is named one of this year's prestigious Warren Alpert Foundation's Distinguished Scholars Award for her research proposal titled, "Interrogating inflammatory pathways in the olfactory epithelium to understand SARS-CoV-2 and neurodegeneration induced anosmia." We look forward to watching her continuous scientific and professional growth in these coming years.
Congratulations to lab alum and recent graduate, Andrew Pruske (CC '23) for his selection to the Ivy League All Star Team where he will play at the 2nd Annual Dream Japan Bowl in Tokyo! Great job balancing academics, lab, the MCAT (for medical school admission) and football.
